A gentler kind of smack
By Erling Ellingsen on June 15, 2006Update 6/25: People seem to be getting the chronology wrong, so to set things straight: I posted the application here June 15th. Being busy at work, I didn't get around to posting the source code and API information. Amit posted those on June 16th.
Update 6/19: thanks to some kind help from Joe Holmes at Apple, the application should now work on older PowerBooks as well. Download version 1.1 below. Left/right are still reversed, but at least it should work.
Update 6/17: As you can see in the comments, there are some PowerBook models where this doesn't work; I'll post a fixed version in a few days.
After the (useless hack) SmackBook was released, some commenters were worried that giving the laptop a smack to the head might be bad for the hard drive, not to mention the soul.
Here's a gentler alternative:
... and this time around, there are only two steps: Download this file and run it.
If you also have the latest version of VirtueDesktops, you can click the "send notifications" checkbox and use it to change desktops.
Source code coming soon.
Thanks to Rune for the smacked-up MacBook icon.

Great, unless you have a 12" Powerbook. They don't have ambient light sensors. I hope people are still working on the Smackbook to make it work properly.
im having truble with this. Dose it work with macbook and not just with the MacBook Pro?
But will it work on other Macs with Ambient Light Sensor, like the iMac, for example?
Veeerrry nice!!
I can feel my Karma filling up! :)
Is there a posssibility of use the left sensor too (with notification SwitchToPreviousWorkspace)? That would rock!!
ThanX!
Sorry. I ment to say " use the right sensor"..
Great Job this looks sweet!
When I open the app the top bar reads "no matching service" and the lower bar reads "..." any ideas???
I have a 17" PB with the latest Virtue Desktops
pgrilo: Unfortunately, I don't think so. On the machines I have tried, there is no reliable reading for the right sensor while the left sensor is illuminated.
Oh I completely can't wait for the code to this - Erling, if you've no objections, I'd love to integrate this directly into VirtueDesktops!
hi, i have a power book and it does not work... when i run it, it says no matching service... (no use to say that i do have light sensors)
Can anyone help me out?
otherwise that seems to be a real great stuff you made!
i have the same problem "no matching service" on my powerBook G4.
i have a 15" screen and use the latest virtue desktop sofware with a MAC OX 10.4.6
Useful!
Runs on my PB G4 15", but shows "No matching service" and "...", both bars are green. Is this MacBook only?
:( it doesn't work on my powerbook 1.67....
I have the message "no matching service"
Interestingly, the sensors appear to be swapped around on my PowerBook G4.
Covering the right-hand sensor shows the bar for the left sensor decrease, and visa versa.
IS there anything other than SwitchToNextWorkspace
Ever thought of tying Smackbook with Parallels ?
What a funny joke it would be to give a slap to a crashed Windows NT/2000/XP (choose your mileage) to get back to a working Mac OS X, Solaris or Linux...
Yeah, very great application!!!
It works good on my 15" PB 1,5Ghz.
Anyway, there's something strange : the right sensor is detecting as the left one (and the left one as the right one, but it doesn't work anyway).
The command sent to virtue desktop doesn't work as expected too. It switches between two virtual desktop : between the first and the second, OR between the third and the fourth, but it seems to be impossible to switch from the second to the third, or from the fourth to the first.
I hope this can be helpfull :)
Hi. I got an 15 " Pb, 1,33 Ghz. It seems my sensors are switched. If I hold my hand over the left one the bar for "Right" goes down and vice versa. So I have to use my right hand to switch desktops.
If you need more information about my system to fix it, just send me a mail.
Really cool feature, keep up the good work.
Nice work!
But, the tap doesn't work here!
Wait, this is strange: I switch the the next desktop in Virtue desktops only with the keyboard light sensor: as soon as I put my hand on the left up corner of the keyboard, I switch!!!.
this is great, but painfull: i can't help switching when i type letters like Q or 1...
The tap doesn't work at all, like i said
Victor
I'm also having "no matching service" problems with it on my 15" powerbook. Any ideas?
Referring to the possible HD damage because of SmackBook, I confirm - weeks from installing it, my iBook's HD broke down; I'll get it back from repair today. Could've been that I cycle with it to school every day, but I always treated it with care, never dropped it. Luckily, the Apple Service saved my data. Well, just a personal experience.
It's just awesome!! That make me love my mac even more! Thank you so much!
Oh, another thing: At the moment i got about 50% CPU-usage only for "system", so an option to change the polling ratio would be very fine, or any other way to lower that ;)
what an cool app!!! thanks for your imagination.
Unfortunately ive got the same problem as dave. "no matching service" . Any ideas? Iam on a pwb 15 1,67
What the two bars are there for? I can click on them!
Hope that will work on my machine!
thanks again....
Sébastien
I'm using a powerbook g4 1.25ghz.
The right sensor, next to the on/off switch is the one that works for me. The left sensor doesn't work, or am I getting right and left wrong?
Read about this on MacBidouille...
Great ! Made me discover virtual desktops.
However on my PBG4 1.33 with backlit keyboard, left and right are inverted.
And if I activate "keyboard flash" it does nothing to the keyboard. Is that supposed to make the backlight flash ?
GIMMIE!....please?
Same problem as Dave, "No matching service" and "...", it doesn't work.
And 17" PowerBook too...(sic) but without VitueDesktops in my case.
Hope it could work one day on our computers, that's kind of a geeky but useful app.
same as Dave, it doesn't work on my 17"PB
Great!!!!
With my macbook pro it works great covering the left side.
Virtue+shadowbook... simply fantastic.
Thank you men!
Erling: I thought so.. I noted the right sensor much less sensible (I guess it is there just to check if there is really an ambient light change or just an hand over one of the sensors.
Now what about a long shadow triggers to left, and a fast shadow triggers to right? Does it make sense?
ThanX a lot for this!
Keep it UP!
I too get "no matching service" in the upper bar and "…" in the lower bar.
I'm using a 15" PB, 1.5GHz with ambient light sensor and have downloaded the most recent VirtueDesktops.
Hi ! great app....but doesn't work for me....I'm on 1,67 Ghz Alubook with SMS and backlight keyborad, but the app scree "No matching service..."
Can u help me please ?
Thx
Quentin
Same problem here, I open the Shadow Book and the top bar reads "no matching service"...
PB 17" (no HD) 1,67 Ghz, 2 Gig, BT Mouse
Any ideas ?
Thanks
Man, you are the number one!!!
THANK YOU.... it's simple amazing!!
i would prefear to use it with exposè is it possible somehow?
This works perfectly on my 15" MacBook Pro - Question: What other useful notifications could I enter in the text field? Anyone have any ideas?
F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C !
Would be nice, if SD stays invisible in the background, once started. Works perfect with VirtueDesktops. Can't wait until Tony Arnold integrates it. Brilliant work!
I try the app on my PowerBook G4 15". There's some strange behaviours:
- Moving my hand over the *right* sensor (power button side) change the value of the bar named "Left".
- Moving my hand over the *left* sensor (esc key side) make almost no change to the bar named "Right".
- Moving my two hands over the two sensors *at the same time* change the two bars down to near zero values...
I hope this will help...
PowerBook 5,6 says no matching service. Is this expected?
got the same problem like Dave...
will this work on the regular macbook?
Dave, same problem on PB 17" 1.67
I read, it's possible to use ShadowBook with a PowerBook G4 (equiped with Sudden Motion Sensor and backlit keyboard)
But how ???
I install ShadowBook and noting !
Please help me !
Hi, i also get "No matching service" and "..." and nothing happens then i trigger the sensors. Powerbook 1,67ghz.
Thanks for this nice tool :)
It works nice on my 15" 1.25GHz PowerBook.
I just wanted to mention, that I have to use the RIGHT sensor for triggering. But the left one doesn't react UNLESS I cover the right one at the same time (but less than the left one). Maybe this could be a way to trigger another action.
Ben
cool. On my PowerBook 15" the readings for both the left and right sensors are possible; only the left is "right" and vica versa and the reading of the right (called "left") seems to get interrupted by a "... failed" message; too briefly to read, however.
I have a 15" PB w/ latest VirtueDesktops(just dled both this and VD) and same prob for me as Dave(post 604).
With the patched DM (http://www.palma.bz/files/mac/DesktopManager-0.5.3-patched.dmg) it is really cool.
Do you think you could implement two triggers for left and right?
From what I can tell Shadowbook is not recognizing the ALS on my 17" PB
I've confirmed the ALS is working so everything should be fine there...is there something I am missing?
By the way awesome idea!
With my 1,5Ghz Pbk with MacOS X.4.6, the software tells "no matching service", but it is not the case.... an idea ?
I got the Dave problem too.
You can email me if you want some help for testing (PB15 / 1,5GHzG4 / 10.4.6).
I want to control my mac like a Jedi too !
Hi, it does not work on my PB g4 1.67, it says no matching service, any idea how to make it work?
Great Stuff! Works perfectly on my PowerBook 1.67 with 10.4.6
btw: VirtueDesktops is a great app, too! :-) Never used it before and instantly loved it!
Question: as VirtueDesktops understands the notification SwitchToNextWorkspace, will it accept other notifications?
I might prefer it to show sticky desktop overlay pager.
Awesome
But we can't switch to the third desktop. A little fix would be just great.
ShadowBook typically responds to my right hand but not my left.
In my case, the left sensor indicator in ShadowBook corresponds to the sensor under the right speaker grille of my PowerBook G4.
Might something be wired incorrectly inside my PowerBook?
Or might this reverse behaviour be something to do with my UK keyboard?
Or maybe, because we drive on different sides of the road? (For a crazy moment I visualised my PowerBook as a touch-free substitute for TomTom GO, or for the gear shift lever … don't try this at home!)
It works fine for me. I have the latest PowerBook 15" (HD, 1.67 GHz, DDR2). Left and right are good too.
Left and right may be inverted on PowerBooks before HD.
It also needs some developpement for it not to use 50% of the CPU.
Anyway, thanks for creating such a cool and usefull app !
How to get the sensors back to enlight the keyboard when it's dark? Since I have installed your software they have not been working anymore. Suggestions?
Experienced the "same problem as Dave". PwrBk 15, 1.65 Ghz, w/ 10.4.6.
Dwnlded both programs. Nada with ShadowBook.
I believe I have a fix for the "Dave" problem; it will be posted soon-ish.
hey dude i was owndering if this will work on my imac g5 (17 inch with isight + updated virtuedesktops+ 10.4.6)
This is an awsome app!
It works great with my 17" PB 1,5 Ghz. You just have to know, that it uses the Right sensor, the left one isn't in use (if there is a left one ...). I really look forward for further releases!
"Same pb as Dave" on a macbook 13inch 2GHz with the latest virtue.
Smacbook worked perfect by the way !!!
Congratulations for all this !!
Works nicely on my 17" MacBookPro.
As a side note for the right sensor: it seems to react less to light changes than the left sensor. But when the left sensor is covered, the right reading reacts somewhat more. Most of the time anyways.
Is the source somewhere availabe? Maybe there is a way to get the right one working with a little bit of fuzzy magic on the numbers.
Oh, yes, a big "Thank you" for this one. It rocks. I am a collector of puzzled faces and I got some more using this tool ;-)
"no matching servce"...
and nothing more ?...
Any help please ?
PB G4 1.5GHz - MacOS 10.4.6 - 1Gb RAM
Please could you tell me if the fix will work on the regular macbook. Already a slave to the smackbook, and this looks even cooler.
Cool - any chance the notification could be sent to an expose action?
Great !!!!!
After reboot and auto launch of ShadowBook it doesn't retain the setting of "Notify Virtue Desktop", so I have to reenable it manualy every time. After waking up from sleep, I have to restart ShadowBook or else it doesn't work (even clicking on the icon in the dock won't bring up the prefferences dialog window)
Wonderful little application, runs great on my Powerbook G4, 17". 1.5 GHZ model, that is.
Only problem is the inversion. The right sensor is read as the left, and vice-versa. Still works, though. Nice work.
you are god thank you i love this app i couldnt get your previous smack book working but got this working and this is much better thank you!!!
i have the same problem..the settings are not saved...i also could not find a plist or similar config file..maybe shadow book doesnt create one??
I just stumbled over this and this is great. I had considered the smackbook option when that became a hit, but like many othes, didn't like the idea of having to jar my MacBook Pro in order to use the app. I immediately wondered if using the light sensor was possible, but I'm clueless in how to figure out how to do it.
One question though: Is there any way to make it a hidden type of application so it doesn't have a dock icon and doesn't show up when I cmd+tab? Not a huge deal, but just adds to clutter.
I just ran across this and thought I'd share. Some people have said that you can only swap between 2 desktops- this is not the case, as I just discovered.
In Virtue, go to its preferences and in the Layout & Pagers tab, look for the "Columns x Rows" portion. This is 2x2 by default, meaning there are only 2 columns. The "Next" command that ShadowBook sends to it makes it only across "across", not "up and down", so it only goes across the columns.
To swap among all 4 virtual desktops, change it to 4 columns and you're set. It'll cycle through all 4 desktops.
thanks a lot !
why dont activate always the option :
send notification when triggered
it will be great to open with session !
It's not working yet, I got my new macbook white today and tried this hack, I got the virtuedesktop installed, and the amstracker, shadowbook as well, the line of code after dragging looked like this:
Last login: Mon Jun 19 17:55:03 on ttyp1
Welcome to Darwin!
i-yuandediannao:~ iyuan$ /Volumes/AMSTracker\ 0.34/AMSTracker; exit
AMS hardware present and initialized
16 0 -2
logout
Please help me to fix it.
Loads of thanks
sorry to say that even after downloading your latest build (1.1), i am still getting the "Dave" problem. "No Matching Service" My pbook is model 5,7.
Best Regards, love what you've done here, great idea!
948/banana: When running the application, does the title bar say "ShadowBook 1.1"? There was a window of a few minutes where the link went to the wrong file, sorry about that.
Same Dave thing (No matching service) on a spankin' new MB13". title bar says ShadowBook 1.1. Virtue not installed (is it required?)
If I run this will the motion sensor still protect the hard drive? Thank you.
Could you please email me a link to the OLD "smackbook" appliation? I bought a MacBook (black) which has motion sensors, but no ambient light sensors, and I'm not concerned that light touches to the case are going to trash my hard drive.. after all, it is the job of the SMS to decide what level of shock or movement warrants parking the drive for self protection... so how could using it be harmful? lol
You Rock!
Steve/951: The MacBook (non-pro) doesn't have the backlit keyboard and ambient light sensor, sorry.
Joey/954: ShadowBook doesn't use the motion sensor at all, so there should be no problem.
Xapplimatic/955: I never made a user-friendly SmackBook application; several other people did. See the comments for the original SmackBook post.
Thank you Erling. I would also like to ask you how the Shadowbook works and how it detects your movement. And if I were to use the original Smackbook file, would that affect the Motion Sensor and not to be able to protect the hard drive? Thank You very much.
I have a PB Rev 5,8 , Ive been using the smackbook since you released it, I love it! Some are saying that its using the right sensor, I guess everyone is going to have a slightly different result. Mine only switches if I move over the left hand side, the right hand side has no effect besides adjusting the numbers on the sensor, I would love to have a right and left, it would be more stylish, OOOOR have it ZOOM!! ( Command-ALt-"+") since its relatively the same motion :)
Installed it and it works, after playing with the threshold a bit. What's weird is that my left sensor is registering in the ShadowBook app as the right sensor, and vice versa.
Also, when switching between desktops in VirtueDesktops, it only either switches between the first two OR the last two, it won't go through all four...
Oh yeah, is there any way of giving it the "dashboard treatment" and right-clicking on it's icon and selecting "don't show in dock"? The icon is nicely designed and all, but I'd just rather it wasn't there. Pershmaps a menubar icon instead? Also, when closing the threshold window and clicking on the ShadowBook dock icon, it doesn't bring the window back, which is really the only reason I would click the dock icon in the first place. Fixable?
Thanks Erling Great Job! No more "Dave" problem on my PB 1.67 17". Left and Right are swapped as you stated but no big deal.
This is working nice!
Is it possible to send other kind of notifications, like an HotKey?
Other question:
Is there a way of change the pooling rate, I noted a permanent CPU usage of 24/30%..
ThanX again!
This is interactivity!
It works now on my powerbook G4 1.67!!! A great software! Adds another coolness to us mac users!
And also if the Shadowbook would work with my black Macbook? Thank you
THANKS! This app is the best! Many dropped jaws att work today!
Please make it possible to controll other things. I would love to be able to activate expose, switch to a specific app, create a new document, mute the sound, pause, switch between open apps… i think you understand what I'm after!
I have a new MBP 17in and the right and left indicators seem to work properly and independently. I've set the threshold and when right drops to yellow nothing happens. When left drops below the events trigger. I wonder if you have the right disabled because of the bugs people have been reporting.
Ok this is my final question. If I use the "Smackbook", and not the "Shadowbook" (because the black macbook does not have light sensors), will the motion sensor still be able to protect my hard drive if I use the Smackbook? Thank you
Rev 1-1 works fine now, on PB 5,6
thanks erling!! now it works also with my PBW 1,67!!!
what a cool app .... anyway to make somthings else than changing the desktop? launch widgets for eg?
Thanks again ...
Believe it or not, only my right sensor can be used to trigger the app's action. This must be random, arbitrary, or vary with model (I have a 17" PB G4 1.67 GHz, one rev before the end of the line, I believe).
Does anyone else realize the MASSIVE cpu cycles this takes to run? I love the idea, but it makes it unusable I'd say...
Working here on 15" 1.67 PB5,6 w.GB ram ... okay, eating 25% CPU but who's counting. This is cool.
I think we've pretty much established right sensor only, people? Fine to stop posting on that?
Thanks, erling!
been using this app for a couple of days now and it's got to be one of the coolest things ive ever had on my mac ever. but has anyone else notcied how much cpu it uses? it's using about 27% constantly on my 2.0GHz macbook pro. think if we could bring this donw a bit it would ake a good thing even better.
Hi there!
Shadowbook is working fine for me, but the right sensor does not seem to work :(
I've made a small video (as well as a tribute) on my blog:
www.maxart-design.com/blog
Thanks a lot for this work.
Max
PS: on the wishlist: "save my preferences"
It might be better if the threshold was specified as a difference between values instead of absolute values. I mean, it will allows you to have lights changes without having to reset you threshold again.
Anyway, that's really awsome.
Hi all,
good work mate, I really enjoyed watching it. I'm planing on getting a macbook, I know the open source library works for ibook, powerbook and macbook pro like you said, will it work also for a macbook.
Well I guess not the jedi way to swap desktop but the darkside one might it?
cheers
well done
Question,
At the beginning of the video, he zooms in the web page he is looking at. How do you zoom in like this on OS X?. Does anyone knows. Thanks. Max.
On my 17" PB 1.33GHz, only the right sensor works - the application sees it as the left sensor though, and it affects the other sensor often as well.
Works great on my 15" 2.0 MacBook Pro. Much less violent than the smack and very useful. A "left senser for previous desktop" and "right senser for next desktop" would rock.
Great !!! Thanks a lot for your hard work !
Please, just add it in the system preferences !!! And add possibility to activate screensaver... expose... dashbord... launch a specific app...
;-)
Please answer this for me Erling, if I want to use the Smackbook(not Shadowbook)will the motion sensor still be able to protect my hard drive?
It would be even cooler if we could customize what action is taken when either sensor is 'shadowed'
For example users could define keystrokes or set applications/AppleScripts to be launched when either sensor is invoked...
Cheers!
Oh man thanks for this? I'm totally going to show this off to my friends :D
I was feeling a little guilty hitting my new MBP :( So this is great!
I like the "delta" right/left trigger action option--that way it might even work at night. :)
Hey, Max (post http://blog.medallia.com/2006/06/shadowbook.html#comment-1081). You can zoom in/out on your screen by using the Universal Access System Preference panel -- "Zoom" settings. It's very useful for those of us baby-boomers with failing eyes!! :-)
Hey, that's petty sweeet...
just one thing : i didn't read aaaaall the comments, by some of them said "my right sensor doesn't work", "is it possible to use the right sensor' ... bla bla bla...
for my part, (powerbook G4 1,67) i can only use the right one...
is it kinda "normal" ??
ShadowBook 1.1 now seems to work fine on my PB G4 1.5 GHz.
But only the right sensor triggers VirtueDesktop.
Thanks for the great work ! Keep it up !
Many thanks for this. I can see that this working with VirtueDesktops will save me hours of time.
As some commenters have already asked, if would be really great if:
1 - The polling rate could be reduced - 25% CPU just to run this.
2 - Prefs remembered, launched at login and removed from the dock.
Thanks again.
Shadow book works amazingly. Im using it with DM. Only problem i have is that instead of from desktop 1 to 2. I go from 1 to 2, then 3 pops onto the screen. Basically skipping the 2nd desktop.
Works insanely well on my15.4 macbook pro!!! NICE!! Two things are bugging me though... Why does it only switch between two desktops, is it some setting i have? Will it be patched soon? Another question... my best friend just got a macbook (no pro) and i was wondering if it will also work on the macbook, knowing of course that it does not have a backlit keyboard, i feel worried. THNX! AWESOME!!!
So, for poor iBook owner (like me), why not using the mic to voice-control Virtue ?
any chance this will work with Parallel's Desktop?
hey guys, it not work on my friends 'book... i wonder why... does the mb have an ambient light senser similar to the mbp, or is it not a standard feature as in the mbp.. hopefully erling will save us all and bring some more innovation to the "smacbook line". Thnx erling, keep it up
Hi, ive downloaded desktop manager, the patch for intel macs and the shadow book. Now, what do i have to do to change desktops with a slap? Sorry if my question is too obvious but i just switched to mac so i know nothing about it.
Thanks to everyone. if someone wants to help me via email heres the adress:
fuser_00 at yahoo.com.ar
Good Luck!
I got this working on my Mac Book Pro and it is Awesome! I also created a simple how to get it setup on my bolg and created a video of the sweetness if that is helpful to anyone: http://richandstephsipe.com/richard_sipe_blog.html.
Again, AWESOME work and Thanks!
Some answers to questions above: The Mac Book does not have the sensor so you can't Jedi Switch :( http://www.apple.com/macbook/specs.html
The reason you are only getting two desktops when you Jedi Switch is the default VirtueDesktops prefs is to stay within a row (the desktops are aranged in a grid). To enable all desktops in the lineup uncheck the stay in row setting (see my blog for the full description).
Hi guys, i just downloaded shadowbook and Virtue Desktops but i cannot make my shadowbook work as a trigger for desktops to switch...what should i do? i just followed Rich's tutorial but even using the "send notification when triggered" option it doesn't work....is there something i should do into Virtue Desktop preferences or to put shadowbook as a trigger?
Thx for your help and sorry for my bad english but i'm Italian :)
thx again!
It works PERFECT on my 15' Macbook Pro but its hard to get it work. Its seems like every time i turn on my cumputer y have to spend some minutes calibrating it. does this happen to everyone?
Thanks,
fuser
Erling,
This is truly an amazing application. I am using it with VirtueDesktops and Parallels, and I am able to switch between "Mac" and "PC" workspaces very very easily!
I would agree with some of the commenters that:
1. CPU utilization is VERY high. On my MacBook Pro 15" with the 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 10-20% of the CPU is used up by ShadowBook.
2. It would be great if the preferences can be remembered.
3. Launch at login and hide from dock would also be very nice to run this as an application in the background.
Works great on my PB 1.5GHz, but as stated earlier:
1. CPU util is around 25%. guess it's because of the visual stuff.
2. there's no Cmd-H to hide it in the menu, command is removed. have to alt-click the desktop.
3. only right sensor works on the PB.
4. preferences are not saved.
Other than those minor quirks (except the CPU util!) this is one cool app. Guess you could almost remove the CPU-problem by adding a checkbox to disable the graphic representation?
is there away to make ShadowBook work with YouControl-Desktops?
I've had YouControl-Desktops for a while, and like it . I've been unable to get virtueDesktops, as their site seems to be down.
My PowerBook shows significant difference in the bars when I cver the ight sensor, but nothing happens.
Eagerly waiting for the sources.
Can't wait to control iTunes that way:
- Keep you hand above the sensor, it'll pause the music, and resume it when you leave it.
- Move your hand over it, iTunes goes to next song.
I already have the second hack working. To see how, check out :
http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=57844
Hi,
as it was said, using the right sensor to get to the other workspaces would rock!
(Left would go to the next workspace and right would go one back).
Greets,
Hauser
works on alu pb 15 - 1.67GHz
but cpu use is 80% around.... still need some optimization.
its great, anyway! :) thanks!
Is there a way to get Shadowbook to just switch applications...
i.e do the Command+Tab action...
thus rotating through open applications?
or to switch to specific applications... ie Parallels?
hey i have a black macbook 2 GHZ i downloaded the shodow book file it says no matching service found i have no idea what virtue desktops is can any 1 help???
Hm, doesnt work on my MacBook, maybe because Os 10.4.7 ???
This works perfectly on my MB Pro (runnign 10.4.7). A question:
I like that if both sensors are below the threshold it doesn't freak out and constantly change desktops or whatever, but is there a way to have it automatically adjust the threshold for when the room is dark? It'd be nice to not have to re-adjust it if the lights turn off.
Also, any plans on making this run in the tray instead of the dock?
Thanks, and this is a great program!
ok i download this and virtue desktop and i dont know how to connect them. can someone email how to fix my problem. im looking for the check box that says send notifications but i cant find out. please help
I have a 2.0 GHz MB Pro w/ 10.4.7, and Virtue Desktops. Unfortunately, I can't get the 'send notification' to work. (And I can't check for updates because their website seems to be down.) It triggers the keyboard flash just fine, it just doesn't seem to do squat to Virtue.
For spike: As for how to get it to switch to Parallels, Virtue already provides the coolest transition. You use Virtue to create two desktops. One for OS X, one for Parallels. You switch to the Parallels desktop, then load Parallels in full-screen mode. Hit ctrl-arrow to switch between the OS X desktop and the Parallels/Windows desktop. Cool cube effect for switching OSes. Combine this with ShadowBook here, and with a wave of your hand, instead of ctrl-arrow, it switches between Windows and Mac OS.
Too bad I can't get ShadowBook to trigger Virtue... (Not to mention my Parallels install of WIndows XP is borked, oh well, MS-DOS 3.3 with Windows 2 works.)
Okay, the older not so nice smackbook worked on my macbook pro 15". This new one, I dunno what this sensor bit is all about, but no matter where I set it, I can only get it to switch desktops tapping the left side, nothing at all on the right, and even still its iffy if the tap will actually do anything. OTH, when it DOES switch, the Virtuedesktops notification works. Am I doing something wrong?
Any word on the source being posted?
If not, how about a adjustable polling slider, auto-proportional sensitivity, auto hide, and a bag of chips? :)
id like one with no dock icon preferably as a system preferences addon and a .KEXT so it loads ON system boot
How much CPU does Shadowbook use. Everytime I open up activity monitor Shadowbook shows up as 6% for one second and then jumps up to 30%.
I have a macbook pro
My only problem on my MGP is that the "Send notification" preference won't stick, so I have to reactivate it every login.
OTOH, I only really logout every week or so so it isn't hugely painful.
Running 10.4.7 on a 2.16GHz MBP.
I just hacked together some source at http://www.anokwa.com/lmutracker.c that works with Virtue.
It's got proportional sensing, adjustable stability and only uses the left sensor. You can edit the source and have it run any script when the threshold is reached.
I'll probably make a full app at some point, but it works well enough for me now.
First of all, THANK YOU VERY MUCH
;)
Second, I think it would be a good idea that the app launch on login and hide it from the dock... or maybe write a cuople of lines about how to do it with the source code
Sorry for my english
XD
On my Macbook pro the CPU is pegged at 25% when shadowbook is enabled and the sucker gets very hot.
Any plans to revise the code?
Thanks
Edd
i couldn't find any email adres so i just wanted to say i really this app.
thanks, this is really cool what you made.
that was it.
greetz,
Raoul
Im still waiting for that window of blue particles that responded to the window being moved on the screen...
Saw this in the first Smackbook video, thought it was cool. Any chance we could download that?
